NAD C-515BEE CD Player NAD C-542 – Fussy and Slow Operation – Scott Mcgredy –
This review is for the NAD C-542 single-disc player, a model very close in performance and appearance to the above listing. Excellent sound quality as far as I can tell, though my older – and in a few cases less expensive – players including Denon and yes Sony, had equivalent sound and far better operating systems. This (considerably newer) unit is much more difficult to use than it has to be, with unnecesarily fussy programming: Track entries over #10 require several steps of “10-Plus” plus another numeral on the 1-through-10-only remote keypad or by using the “Skip” feature to find the track and then enter it. On CDs with many tracks this seems overly complex and time-consuming for such a simple computer-age task. The C-542 also requires pressing “Program” after EVERY numeral input. As there’s no high-number keyboard on the main unit, programming must be done in one or a combination of these methods every time. So much for spontaniety in your music listening! Also, when play-order is finally achieved, the C-542’s reponse time for finding and playing track(s)is unusually slow…REALLY slow. Where’s the next song?…(wait wait wait) Once again, spontaneity is thrown out the window. Plus, it can NOT play a compact disc’s segued tracks without inserting a pause. In other words, if you program the track numbers in a multi-part piece of music such as a suite or other closely adjacent or related track there’s a sonically-empty space to ruin it. This last may be a factor of its overall slowness. Regarding this obvious problem/oversight/question, I contacted the company via email and phone because it is not addressed in the hardcopy manual; Perhaps I was doing something wrong? But no reponse whatsoever was had from the NAD company. This unit does not handle scratched or dirty discs well either, where my older other-brand units sailed right through fingerprints and scuffs. This player simply can’t get through even the slightest imperfection on a disc’s surface. Perhaps other NAD CD-players address these issues. Maybe you’re willing to take the chance, but the NAD C-542 is a big disappointment for me considering its brand name. Even for home, non-DJ use, if you want to hear your music tracking quickly and efficiently, this is not the unit for you.
I wish I had never bought the NAD C-515BEE CD player – MSom – Boston, MA, USA
The NAD C-515BEE CD player was a big disappointment from the moment I received it. The first unit I received could not open the CD shelf at all. The second unit I got was slightly better, but the electronics appear to not be working properly. The player will randomly open and close the CD shelf without me pushing any buttons, which has destroyed multiple CD’s of mine. Additionally there is a significant amount of noise from the spinning of the CD, which is particularly disturbing when listening to classical music at lower volumes.
All in all I wish I had never bought this player and would return it if I had the chance.

I’ve had the NAD C515BEE long enough to appreciate it. The matching amp I purchased is the C315BEE…currently, I’m using MISSION 771 speakers,(but am awaiting a pair of AXIOM bookshelf speakers…they handle more bass). AudioQuest interconnects and Dayton pre-terminated speaker cables round out the system. My collection is quite eclectic…from 60’s Rock to World Lounge music, Brazillian easy listening, classical…on and on.. The NAD handles everything clearly, precisely. Compared to the Denon/Sony system I had been using…it’s as if the sun came out. The soundstage is huge…(I’ve an Ipod, but never listen to it at home…the same music sounds much better on CD…to me)
I have a nice sound system in my shop with two big Klipsch speakers mounted on the wall, two smaller ones on a side wall and two 15″ subs. I have three amps with an active crossover set at 100 Hz. The point of all this is that the system sounds good enough to hear differences in some equipment. I was using a Pioneer ( four years ago) DVD player that also had the capability to play MP3s recorded on a CD. When I switched to the NAD C515BEE there was a tremendous difference in clarity, detail, and soundstage. It made me smile the first song I played. I also like the MP3 algorithms they use, very hard to tell the difference between a commercial CD and an MP3 I recorded myself ( I always use 192 setting instead of 128, it sounds better).
The only thing I don’t like is that when you set the time function to “time remaining”, you have to reset it every time you change CDs, and you can only do it from the remote, which made it difficult to use for a DJ gig. NAD – C -326BEE – Stereo Integrated Amplifier Great stereo for not a lot of money… – M. Hamilton –
I own the 326’s little brother…the 315BEE(40w X 2, 0)…additionally, the 515 CD player….and a couple of sweet Mission speakers(the old 77 series,bookshelfs)….For a diminutive system as mine…the sound is quite stunning…for a relaxing evening of classical, jazz or melodic vocal…I love it. I’ve had this system for over a year with no issues…just an “inward smile” when the music starts.

I bought this amp on the advice of a trusted shop in my area. My situation was that I was looking to replace the Yamaha RX-V750 that I was using in my newly started listening room. Mated to a Pioneer Elite 47Ai Universal Player and B&W 685 monitors (and ASW650 sub), I felt that there was plenty of room for improvement in the system but wasn’t 100% sure which way to turn or which component I should focus 0 on. The advice was to try this amp out with the assurance that I could return it if I wasn’t impressed.

I’m not through the break-in period and I’m 100% thrilled with the difference this NAD stereo receiver has made in the sound of my 2 channel setup. My B&W 685’s sound 100% better with this receiver than they did with the Yamaha (even in its respective “Pure Direct” mode) – and I was still quite pleased with the way the Yamaha sounded. I was really skeptical about how much improvement I might really notice swapping receivers, thinking that the Yamaha might actually just have more than what I needed and it’s 2-channel capabilities might be just fine. But really the straight-forward design, high-current NAD design is EXACTLY what my ears were looking for. I can’t be happier.

Overall, the full spectrum of sound sounds more robust, the highs are more clear, and without a doubt the lows are punchier. Everything seems far more clear. My biggest surprise is how much better SACD’s sound with this receiver. This has been an eye-opening switch.
speakers – mid 1990’s B&W CDM2 bookshelf; sources: Ipod Touch; Denon DVD-3800 player; Samsung HD T.V. Wonderful integrated amp so far. This amp replaces a Denon AVR-3803 7.1 receiver, which only lasted a little over four years until the unit decided not to work anymore. Complaints: runs volcano hot – so don’t plan on putting anything on top of the amp; can’t tell the position of the volume dial because the dial is not back-lit, nor are there any markings on the bezel around the volume dial; stupid naming convention for NAD models. Kudos: powerful enough to drive my 2.1 system; amazing clean sound; clean, simple look on the front of the chassis; line level input for a digital media player source, such as an mp3 player. I am not an audiophile snob, but I do like to get quality gear without spending a fortune. I think the NAD integrated amp fits the bill. Paid ~0 at local store. There probably are better integrated amps out there than the NAD 326bee, but I think the dollar amount would start at ~ 0. I do not see a reason to not get the NAD 326beee, unless the desire is to fill a stadium-sized room. Now go listen to some good ‘ol fashioned 2 channel goodness!

let’s hope the following is a fluke and not indicative of NAD quality. The unit is in the shop after ~90 days of use because of popping out of one channel, regardless of source selection. Took the unit to my B&M shop where i bought it, where the shop said that it was getting “fixed.” This may be the first/last piece of NAD equipment, depending on the outcome of the correction to the problem.

The local B&M shop was smart and kind enough to get a new unit from NAD, rather than waiting for the 3+ weeks I was out while waiting on back ordered parts to fix the unit. I still thoroughly enjoy the amp, and still think it’s an impressive amp to upgrade a two-channel music system. My original commments about the unit running hot – that should be a clue that there’s something wrong with the unit. The replacement runs warm, but not as hot as the original unit did. I’ve been with the replacement unit for about three weeks, and all seems to working as it should.
